reflection

Posted in 212 MC on February 4, 2009 by ademolly1

So far, I have found this module to be quite challenging but very interesting. I’ve never been much of a computer whiz so its put me in a diffrent space in terms of developing an idea and bringing it to life. I prefer to map things out on paper and flesh ideas out on paper, this course pushes us to work almost solely on computer to create and articulate our ideas. I have enjoyed the process thus far but at times I’ve found it to be quite difficult. Leaning to use flash requires alot of practice and attentinon to detail, amd like most things if you dont do em well, it will show. The lectures themselves also helped me with my creative processes by making me look to refrences I wouldnt have assosiated with interactive media to begin with. Reaseaching things like virtual reality and immersive media made me think about the direction new technology is going when paralleled with some of the movies and TV shows that are currently out and even that were being made years ago, it then made me ask, “its this life immitating art or the other way around?” Upon doing research, I found the the mobile phone was redived from the communicators used in the cult TV show Star Trek. Other such media text that pose the same question are the japanese animation series Gundam Wing in which because the use of virtical tanks ( 60ft robots to be exact) was made so fiesable in te anime, NASA have looked into ways of implamenting this technology into some of there development processes. Minority Report also did the same. The line to weather who copied who came often become blurred but with the advances in technonlgy both on screen and off, most of what we see and do are not far away from reality.

POV

POV is shorthand for point of view. This term is used to show a film scene through the eyes of a particular character. . In games this is known as 1st person.  During POV you sometimes get to see the characters limbs and reflection in mirrors or glass, this further submerges you into the character. POV was made popular in TV by the comedy, “Peep Show”. throughout the show we get to see live thourgh the main, and sometimes other characters point of view. POV was first introduced to computer games in the 70′s by a game called “Maze Wars”. The genre took off in the 90′s with the introduction of the Doom series. Other succesful titles in the series include Halo, Unreal tournarment and most recently Mirrors Edge.

Mirrors edge is a 1st person game developed in 2008 but isnt the conventional 1st person shooter we are used as the empthesis of the game is placed on the up and coming urban sprot Parkor. In this game, you get to see the characters arms flailing about as you fall from a hight , you also get to see the arms pumping as she runs and the camera shakes to simulate that also.

developing story/idea

Posted in 212 MC on February 4, 2009 by ademolly1

When thinking about the story, I wanted to make sure the idea was currednt and that the characters I create can be related to and can be emotionally attached to. I looked at TV shows such as The Wire, 24, The Shield, Dexter and Third Watch. I also looked at films like Taken, Old Boy, Miniority Report, and Proof of Life. i looked at the storylines each of theses films have and how they use the chacraters and plots to immerse the viewer into the action. With this in mind, I made my game a 1st person type game so you can be the main characteer and see how they see the action unfold. I wanted the player to relate and feel the frustration, and anger of the character when playing this game

initial idea

Posted in 212 MC on February 4, 2009 by ademolly1

The initial ides for my game was based on the hit arcade game of the mid 80′s called “Dragons Lair”. My games was a series of predetermined sequences that when the right button was pressed at the right time, you will be able to advane to the next stage, if pressed wrong you would subsequently “die” and you would have to start again. the game dragons lair was created in 1983 and enigneered by former Disney animators. It took 6 years to create and made a 30 million when it was first sold. I wante to base my idea not so much on the dungons and tragons theme but on the predetermined theme but use live action but upon tryin to get the sequences right and time scale, i reverted the idea back to animation and stills.

types and uses

Posted in 212 MC on February 4, 2009 by ademolly1

The most common uses for interactive media is in museums and galleries as a part of an instalation. Another use or term for interactive media is immersive media, which can also be called virtual reality. it is often known as technology of the future but it is being used and exists today, mostly for video gaming, simulating and art projects. It is used by creating an artificial enviroment to add to the simulation to give a sence of immersion. virtual immersive media technology has been made popular through films and TV shows like Minority report, Vertuosity, Lawnmowerman, The Cell and music videos like 50 Cents, “Ayo technology”.

interactive media

Posted in 212 MC on February 4, 2009 by ademolly1

for this interactive media course, we were asked to produce a flash based game.  To do this, I started at the beginning by asking, “what is interactive media?” Interactive media is a medium that allows people to be able to actively participate and get involved hence the term interactive. It can be played with, manipulated and altered in many ways. Interactive media can be in the form of a simulator, a puzzle, a game or a presentation. Interaction also comes from touch screen technology and light displays.
